Mr. Owen J Owens MD, MRCOG, MRCPI

Mr Owens is a Consultant in Gynaecology. He holds an NHS consultant position at Luton and Dunstable NHS trust since 1994. He performs general gynaecology, hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. He performs Gynaecological Oncology Surgery at Watford General. He has a private practice at both SPIRE Hospital Harpenden (formerly BUPA Harpenden) and 92 Harley Street.

He undertook his initial training in the Dublin Teaching Hospitals, followed by registrar posts in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals and senior registrar posts at the Glasgow Teaching Hospitals. He obtained his MD for his research into Growth Factors in Ovarian Cancer in 1991 from University College Dublin and has published his research. He has been involved with the move of gynaecological cancer services to Watford General and is one of three surgeons who performs gynaecological oncology surgery for South Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Mr Owens has a large gynaecological experience in both general gynaecology, gynaecological cancer surgery, minimal invasive hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery. Mr Owens is also trained in minimal access hysteroscopic surgery including newer forms of treatment for heavy periods (Novasure). Mr Owens is also trained in laparoscopic key hole surgery for ovarian cysts, endometriosis and staging for gynaecological cancer where appropriate. He is also interested and performs surgery for vaginal prolapse including the new Prolift Surgical techniques. He also performs surgery for fibroids. He carries out colposcopy for abnormal cervical smears and vulvoscopy for diseases of the vulva. Mr Owens also performs laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomies.

He is an examiner at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and examines for part 2 of the MRCOG courses at Whipps Cross Hospital and Addenbrookes.

Mr Owens is a member of the British Society of Colposcopists and Cervical Pathologists (BSCCP) and a member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS).

Mr Owens is married with 3 children and lives in Hertfordshire. His interests outside of medicine include reading, tennis, golf, theatre and travel.
