Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS)

PGS may assist some couples with a history of repeated miscarriage or repeated IVF failure. It may also be considered for some older women who may have an increased risk of having a pregnancy affected by an altered number of chromosomes. An example of this is Down’s syndrome. The PGS technique screens embryos for aneuploidy. This is the presence of a loss or gain in the number of chromosomes and is thought to be one of the causes of miscarriage or failure to achieve a successful pregnancy. The PGS technique enables the screening of embryos with the aim of achieving a successful pregnancy. PGS should be considered as an experimental technique. There is currently insufficient evidence in the literature to recommend this as a routine procedure.
