Fertility check up

Many people maybe concerned about their potential fertility although they may not be currently trying for a baby. There are tests and investigations available which may give information regarding ones fertility and which maybe helpful in making decisions about when to start a family. On the male side the most appropriate test is a semen analysis. For the female there is a variety of tests to establish normal anatomy and physiology. Ovarian reserve or an assessment of the quantity of eggs that maybe remaining within the ovary can be detected using a variety of different bloods tests; AMH, inhibin B and FSH currently seem to be the most accurate. Recent work as also shown that ultrasound scan assessment of ovary volume and follicle count may to be helpful in assessing ovarian reserve. Our own team were amongst the first in the world to publish on this technique. Basic pelvic anatomy can be detected with an ultrasound scan and a test of the fallopian tubes for patency can be done using an x-ray called a hysterosalpingogram. It is always sensible to discuss your concerns with your consultant so that an appropriate investigatory programme can be advised for you. You should also be aware that these tests are not necessarily an insurance policy guaranteeing successful fertility in the future.
